2. Canon Character Information
Name: Benjamin Isaac Braeden
PB: Michael Trevino
Journal: mini-dean.dreamwidth.org
Age: 25
Appearance: Ben is a hardened warrior from a zombie apocalyptic world. He’s about 6’ tall, with black unruly hair and blue eyes. He always looks skinny due to a high metabolism and never getting enough food in his teen years. He used to look a lot like Dean Winchester, but after he gave his body to the archangel Michael to use to smite Satan, his body was rebuilt from it’s askes in a form that is more like his mother’s facial features. He also has a tattoo on his left pectoral, a triquetra, that marks him as an apostle in a post-apocalyptic world. The tattoo will glow when he is in trouble and sends out a signal to angels to come to his aid.

SPN Episode “The End” : http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=The_End
World History: This is a world that a virus was created by the Horseman Pestilence. The virus, Croatoan, is aimed at the human race to essentially annihilate it so that Lucifer can rebuild the earth back into the garden that he felt the humans destroyed. Lucifer has been walking the earth now for over ten years in the body of Sam Winchester, and the human race is dipping below a million worldwide - most in small, rural towns and distant tribes that haven’t had exposure to the population at large.
The virus turns the average person into a flesh craving, violent zombie like being, intent on ripping apart and consuming any creature not like them. It’s a virus that started as a fake vaccine cure to the swine flu, and continues to be transferred through fluid exposure from the infected. It starts in the US, followed quickly overseas. It hits Australia in 2014, when Sarah Palin is president. Sports events and any real freedom of assembly has been revoked, and most areas are quarantined and patrolled by the military. Movies and television are things of the past, and electricity died except in some areas where the plants continue to work without supervision.
As the years go on, the military starts to die out as they become infected as well. There is little left in major city areas. Even the Croats, without flesh to eat, devour themselves until the area is suddenly eerily quiet and abandoned. By 2017, the government dies as DC is finally devoured.
Humans and their genetic brothers are the only creatures affected. Other species are immune, and have become wild again and roam the land. Without human interference, and a little help from Lucifer, the world is slowly starting to heal itself from the damages that technology has created. In essence, it’s turning back into the garden.
There is no cure, and always a fear that they will be found out and killed. Safety doesn’t come in numbers, but human nature urges people to find one another. “Tribes” try to stay small though in fear of becoming too large will draw attention from any Croats looking for a warm meal.
It’s the end of the world, and the people know it. They are just holding on and trying to get to the next day, every day. But there is no hope that it will stop and go back to the way it was.
Character History: By the time Ben is ten, the virus breaks out and spreads quickly in the USA. As it grows in strength and destroys entire cities, the military takes over and barricades cities to quarantine off the Croat zones. Cicero becomes one of these barricaded military bases, and is there for almost two years. His mother enlists and learns to be a medic, and she dates a soldier - Zack - who teaches Ben how to shoot a gun and protect himself.
In 2012, while Zack and his mother are out trying to look for survivors, they get attacked by Croats. Lisa makes a call to Ben before her end, telling him to run as far as he could. He escapes from the military base as the sirens go off and the base is attacked by the Croats. He believes that he’s the only survivor of this attack, and knows his mother died.
Part of the emergency bag Lisa had Ben grab contained a map with safe places. As he’s trying to get to one while hitchhiking, he runs into Dean and a few of his soldiers on a supply run. Dean remembers the kid and takes him in, and Ben is the only kid in the small survivor camp.
Dean wants Ben to spend most of his time with Chuck, the prophet who has become the one in charge of supplies, but Ben is curious and soon meets everyone, including the hippy in the back cabin called Cas. Dean tries to keep Ben from Cas, and even Cas knows he’s not the best influence, but there’s something about Cas that Ben finds a bit of comfort, and admires the amount of knowledge that is trapped in the ex-angel’s brain.
Life doesn’t change much as the next two years pass. Ben gets older, becomes a teenager, and the girls tend to love the adorable young man who is learning to flirt from them. Then one day something changes in the camp, and Ben isn’t really allowed to explore as much. There is an air that something big is about to happen, and it might stop the Croats. Dean and Cas, along with the rest of the soldiers, head out, but they never come back.
Assuming that the Croats got them, they choose to pack up and flee. Ben finds that even though he’s the youngest, the rest of them are turning to him for advice. He isn’t sure if it’s because he acts like Dean, looks a bit like him, or just has the soldier training, but he takes on that hat and works to find them some kind of safety.
It’s a quick learning curve, but Ben learns how to be the head of his tribe. He ends the focus on fighting and changes it to pure survival, and he moves them occasionally just as a precaution. By the time he’s 21, he finds a farmhouse in Iowa on a few hundred acres of farmland and then forest, and they have set up a more permanent camp there. They don’t disturb the farm animals living on the land, but to borrow from them to make food. Ben solely rides into towns on his motorcycle to get supplies from the abandoned stores and service stations. He’s had a few run-ins with strangling Croats, and has learned the hard way that the safety of the tribe comes over any hesitation and empathy for the human that once lived in that body. He doesn’t want the others risking their lives or the others by wandering, and he has told them that if he’s not back in a certain amount of time, to pack up and move immediately without him.
When Ben was pulled for BN, he was from a point where he was 23. the year is 2022. He and his tribe of nine people total were living in a farmhouse in Iowa, and he was riding his motorcycle into the larger abandoned town nearby to try and find a few supplies. It is then that he makes his 1st trip to Bete Noire (see below).
He returns with no memories of his six months in Bete Noire beyond feeling like it was a dream in the back of his mind, and gets his supplies and returns to his tribe like he never disappeared. They stay in relative safety for about another six months, and then there is a shift in the world. It’s like a tremor of fear that sends ripples through the air.
It’s that night that the farmhouse gets attacked by the Croats. Ben rushes down to try and help save his tribe, but stops when he sees Sam Winchester standing there. There’s a moment where they just look at each other, and then there’s a bright light that blinds Ben.
When he opens his eyes, he’s in a bright, windowless room. There are three other people that he doesn’t recognize there, all of them sitting around and looking confused as to what they are there for.
At that point, they are met by an angel who tells them that they have been chosen to help end the Apocalypse. The other three are vessels for the archangels Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel. They are the original vessels, and they are given the offer to say yes, and that the angels would use their bodies to fight Lucifer, and when they win, would allow them to return to earth as a hero and help reunite the remaining people on earth.
The other three agree, but Ben is hesitant. He wants answers as to what happened, having seen Sam moments before he was pulled. So in hearing this, Michael comes to Ben in a beam of light and talks to him.
Michael tells Ben the hard truth about what Dean had done: he refused to kill his brother, even with the devil possessing him. When he realized the truth, it was too late and the angels had other plans. While Michael was frustrated and angry at that, Ben suddenly understood all of Dean’s anger and refusal to bond with him, and why he fought so hard. The insight to all of that was almost cathartic, and healed a lot of the anger that Ben had towards Dean and the “abandonment”, which was just Dean trying to save Sam and failing.
Ben asked how it would be possible for him to be a vessel if it was supposed to be Dean. Michael revealed that while Ben is not Dean’s son, he is from the bloodline generations up. However, because he is not a true vessel - not like Dean, Sam, or the others who were in the room - Ben’s body would be highly damaged from the effort and the angels would not be able to heal it - if it survived at all.
A deal is made between the angel and Ben at that point. He would agree to letting Michael using his body, but in return when it was over, Michael would create a new body from the ashes of his old, and return Ben back to earth to help bring the scattered masses back together.
So Michael takes over Ben, and the epic apocalyptic battle happens. Lucifer is defeated, and the destruction of the devil creates a blast that destroys a good portion of the world, as well as wiping out the remnants of the Croatian virus. Lucifer had also destroyed most of the demon race during his reign as well, so monsters are now few and far between.
As the battle ends, the energy Michael has spent leaves Ben’s body as a burnt mass. Michael pulls out, carrying Ben’s soul and the body disintegrates to ash. Keeping his promise, a new body is made, this time leaning more along the genes of Ben’s mother, and then his soul is reinserted to bring him back to life. A tattoo is added to his chest, a triquetra, as a way to signify Ben’s new role in life. He comes back clean from all his addictions as well.
The five vessels (Ben, the three from the room, and the man who Raphael was possession) return to the pretty room, where they are met by Chuck and five lesser angels. Chuck explains his role as prophet, and his next job is to write their stories. The group are all now modern-age apostles, and he gives them more details about their job to reunite the people of the world. Each apostle is given one country (Europe/Asia together, and Antarctica is gone) and an angel guardian to lead them to the remaining people of the world. They are supposed to travel and find the people, give them hope and faith that the bad times are over, and send them on a journey to five locations on the Earth where a garden is being made for them to enjoy paradise. When they find everyone, the apostles can join the rest of humanity as heroes of the world and get their peace.
Ben is given North America to travel from, and his angel sidekick is Seraphiel, living in a human females body, blond and perky. She is to guide Ben along to find the different tribes hidden across the USA, Canada and Mexico. As they travel from tribe to tribe, Seraphiel tries to help Ben heal his scarred psyche from the life he’s lived, and to find his true self under the sarcasm, immaturity, and abandonment issues.
After hitting a few tribes along the east coast, they are starting to head west. Seraphiel leaves Ben to drive for a few hours to go back to heaven, and it’s along that road that leads him back to Bete Noire for the second time.
Powers/Talents: No powers of his own. His tattoo is an angel homing signal. He is a chosen vessel for Archangel Michael. He is a good shot with a gun. And he is usually an expert at getting into trouble.
Personality: Ben is a very hard, angry young man. He lost his mother when he was 12, and when he was 15, he became a leader of a group of survivors. He stopped being a kid a long time ago, but he is prone to childish moments. He has been the “boss” for eight years now and has no sense of authority to anyone, but has a deep set of responsibility to keeping people safe.
He is still a momma’s boy, and while he won’t admit it, he does long to have his mother back. He is afraid though that she won’t like what he’s become. He’s also mad as hell as Dean disappearing, because he was Ben’s father figure. The abandonment has given him a harder edge on being able to take care of himself and not wanting anyone to take care of him. He hides it behind the sarcastic wit that he developed in those “trying to be like Dean” years.
He hated disease, and tends to shy away from people who even look sick. The Croatoan virus has claimed a lot of people in his world, to the point where humanity has almost been wiped off the map at this point. He refuses to get sick, or admit he even has a cold. And if he thinks you’re going to turn into a mindless, flesh-eating zombie, the guns are going to come out quickly.
Ben has complete knowledge that demons, vampires, and all the other bad things in the world are real. He was kidnapped by changelings (SPN episode 3.02) and while he bounced back easily, it changed his view on what is real and what isn’t forever. He learned how to shoot a gun when he was 11 and isn’t afraid to use it, or any other weapon he can get his hands on, to protect himself and others. It’s a live or die world to him, and there is no “aim for the kneecaps” in that mindset.
The stress from that life can eat away at him, and he has three ways to decompress. The first is sex. Dying species need to have sex often. The second is recreational drugs. Cas left behind quite a stash when he left, and Ben packaged them up for the group. And the third is riding on his motorcycle. He has always loved racecars and since it’s hard to get in and out of infected areas for supplies on a car, his motorcycle tends to get the job done. He has yet to try all three methods at once, but thinks that would be kinda awesome.
He is a recovering drug addict, having fallen off the wagon once during his time in BeteNoire. He still struggles with it, but for the most part has been clean since he came back in his new body.
Why would your character be chosen? Beyond the fact he has an amazing ass, Ben is a survivor who has proven that he can take care of a tiny little tribe with nothing more than his intelligence and bravado. There is more to him than that, but it’s the skills that come with being the Michael “sword”.
How much does your character know about nonhumans? Ben was kidnapped by changlings when he was a kid. He then lived through a zombie apocalypse and was mentored by 1. Dean Winchester and 2. Castiel. Oh, and then there was Chuck, the walking historian on all things creepy. If it existed in their world, Ben pretty much heard something about it - but it may not be 100% accurate.
Why this character: Ever since leaving Bete Noire, Ben has been wanting an outlet to play in. But as a fandom OC, there aren’t a lot of places that he can go. He won’t shut up, and Wizera said he could come play here.
AU Addendum: Most of the information about how he is an AU is in the history. I chose to make him an AU because I wanted a character that had grown up and seen the horrors of a zombie apocalypse but didn’t want to play just another Winchester. Ben was an established canon child character who had a link to Dean Winchester, and was great choice to making this kind of character without having to make up a new character no one had heard of.
Past Game History: For the most part, Ben spent his time in Bete Noire as a troll. He wasn’t very helpful at first as he was still doing drugs and worried about a plague that came to the city not long after he arrived. However, he cleaned himself up after awhile, got a job at the hospital, and tried to be a productive member of society.
The thing that changed Ben the most in his time in the city was through the friendships he made, especially with his relationships with Pasha and with Dean. With Dean, he was able to break down the abandonment issues he had developed when Dean abandoned the group when he was still a teenager. It helped him have a bit more pride in himself, and lose a lot of the anger that he carried around that fed into his vices.
With Pasha, he started to learn how to form a healthy adult relationship. Pasha was very naive to a lot of things he knew about, and vice versa. She put up with him and his sarcastic but good-intentioned humor, and in that opened a doorway into someone's life that wasn’t depending on him for survival, but just as a friend and then boyfriend. He was only getting to start experiencing this new relationship status when he was pulled from Bete Noire again.
4. Samples
Please either include a first-person entry that could be your character's first post on The Network, or a third-person prose or action spam sample that could be your character's reaction to arriving in Dagaz. For the other two samples, links to previous character examples are fine.
First-Person: Okay, so I wake up on a stone ground and get told the basic of ‘hello, you’ve been chosen to be a possible mate for our prince’ before getting handed some very abercrombie type clothes and told that hopefully the odds are in my favor.
What the fuck. I mean, really? Kidnapping people just to get this prince guy hooked up and laid? They don’t need to kidnap people for that. I’m pretty sure you can go up to any chick on the street and ask them if they are willing to be a royal baby factory and they will not say no.
Unless he’s into guys. Well, he’d have to be if he picked me, because I’m pretty damn sure they noticed that before they grabbed me. And while I do have a nice ass, that doesn’t mean I’m going to let someone tap it without at least buying me a drink first.
Looks like this is going to be just another crazy side trip in my life. Hopefully they don’t grab Pasha too. Her head might just explode hearing about this place...
Third-Person:
The motorcycle skidded to a stop as the driver realized he wasn’t in Kansas anymore. Technically, not in Iowa, but that didn’t make a bit of difference since he didn’t know where he was at all. Pulling off his helmet, Ben Braeden looked around the streets with unshaded eyes, his hand slowly going to his hip where the handgun was hanging on his hip. The semi-automatic was strapped to the bike, but he didn’t think he would need it just yet.
“Hello?” He hated giving up his position, but there was a feeling to this place. Life. He wasn’t used to rolling into a town and feeling energy of other people around. Of course, there was the chance he had just driven into Croat Central.
He watched as a few people walked passed him on the opposite side of the street. When he was sure they weren’t going to charge him to try and eat his brains, he took a moment to appreciate the fine ass and tits on the barely dressed woman. Not that his girls waiting back home weren’t hot, but damn that was new and way more provocative than he remembered growing up. He was going to have to find her later and see if she wanted to give him a private little tour of this place.
Moving the bike off to the side of the street, he got off and stretched before taking a good look around. This place was definitely alive, and safe. Well, as safe as one could be. But the Croats hadn’t touched it yet, and from what he could see, there was electricity and probably indoor plumbing. That was a god send for him. His tribe would thrive here.
Of course, first he had to figure out just where the hell he was.
