Sibling Time in the New Place

The apartment was only two weeks old, and already Ben had to clean it up. His mother and Sam had helped him get some furniture for the one bedroom, but he had his own space and it felt good. Of course, he was also living up to the single male sterotype and the place was trashed almost immediately with take-out cartons and dirty clothes.

But today he was cleaning it all up while trying to cook something simple for dinner. He had suggested to Maddie on her birthday that they get together for some sibling time, but it had been put off until now.

It was a Friday night, and he had offered Maddie dinner and a movie and just time to hang out. It got her out of the house, and if she ended up eating and then bailing to go see her boyfriend and he covered for her... well, he couldn't blame her for ditching him for better company.

However, the place should at least look nice when she got there - more than likely their father was going to interrogate her for info on what the place looked like after all.

The food was in the over cooking as he looked up at the clock, wondering just where his sister might be. He debated calling her, but figured she might have just missed one bus and had to grab the next one.

Maddie knew she was running late. She checked her watch as she rushed up the stairs to Ben's building. Back home she'd had to try on several different outfits, and get over her fit of nerves. She wanted to show up as a cool little sister that he'd want around, but not look too young either. It was probably stupid, but it's what it was, and she was late because of it. Hopefully he wouldn't be upset.

She found his door and knocked quickly.

Ben heard the knock and looked up. "I'll be right there!" he shouted, tossing the socks he had gathered under the couch, kicking some other things under quickly before rushing to the door. He took a deep breath, straightening his clothes and then opened the door.

"Hey, was beginning to wonder if I had been stood up..." he teased a bit, holding the door open and motioning for her to enter.

She grinned when the door opened. "Nah, can't stand up free food."

"Well, as long as I don't poison us in the process, we'll be good." He closed the door behind her, then rubbed the back of his neck.

"You want something to drink? I didn't know what you might like so I got a few things..."

She smirked. "I think I'll be okay." She wandered in, looking around a bit. "Water is fine."

"Water it is." He walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge, pulling out two bottles of water and tossing one to her.

"So mom got me this cookbook and told me not to eat out all the time. Of course it doesn't tell you about all the little things that you need to have, so I had to improvise a bit."

He looked back out at her. "Do you like meatloaf?"

Maddie caught the water and raised a brow slightly. "Improvise?" She couldn't hide the slight grimace. Those words had made some interesting meals with her and Dad when they were on their own.

Ben rubbed the back of his neck again. "If it's that horrible, I'll order pizza. Deal?"

She nodded. "Deal." She bit her lip and looked around some more, not sure what to say. "It...looks nice."

"It's not bad for a first place. Rent around here costs an arm and a leg. I'm surprised I'm able to afford food."

He did point at the large flat screen television. "However, Dad made a very nice contribution."

She grinned and checked out the tv. "Niiice. I can see where movie night's gonna happen. Mom won't let him buy one of these for us. Says we watch enough tv as it is, we'd never pull ourselves from one of these."

"I guess Dad figured if someone was going to get one, he could at least keep it in the family, right? I have been told that he is going to visit Sundays during football season whether I like it or not."

He looked at his very small movie rack. "Though unless you're into adrenaline filled action movies, I might need to netflix things a few days before you come over."

She shrugged. "I love action movies. I'd even like coming over to watch some football with you guys. If...if you know, you wanted."

"Of course. I didn't think you'd be into football. But you're always welcome." Ben smiled. "But you realize you'll have to wear face paint."

She grinned and plopped down on his couch. "I like football enough. And if I have to wear face paint, I will. I'm all for looking stupid." She knew she was opening herself up for a joke, but she almost wanted him to pick. That was what brothers and sisters did, wasn't it?

Ben sat down on the table and smiled. "I'm hoping to get a Wii2 sometime soon once I can scrape up some extra cash."

Maddie nodded. "Sounds cool. I've never actually played one."

"It's actually really cool. You have to move your whole body around to play the game, and you get to feel like you're really part of the action."

"I dunno. I kinda like being lazy," she grinned.

"Yeah, well..." Ben stopped and turned to look back at the kitchen. "Do you smell something burning?"

Maddie frowned too and looked towards the kitchen. She burst out laughing. "I think it's dinner."

"Shit!" Ben growled, turning and rushing for the kitchen, throwing open the oven and trying to fan at the smoke. "Hey, run around opening windows before the fire alarm goes off or something!" he shouted to her.

Maddie did like he asked, but she was laughing her ass off the entire time. "Need a fire extinguisher?!"

Grabbing the oven mitts, he managed to pull the burn thing out of the oven and got it into the sink and turned on the cold water.

"No, but looks like we're going to need pizza menus after all."

She crinkled her nose and wandered into the kitchen. "Okay, but I'll only forgive you if we get the works."

Ben looked at her approvingly. "You really are my sister," he said with a laugh.

She beamed. "You doubted it?"

"No, but you confirm it sometimes in the most interesting ways." He grinned, reaching for the pizza menu.

"Can't help it, it's who I am," she said with a shrug.
